Els 4Gats
Brief History
Emblematic of Catalan Modernism, Els 4Gats restaurant located at number 3bis Montsió street in Barcelona opened on the 12th June 1897. It occupies the ground floor of the building designed by the modernist architect Puig i Cadafalch. At the time Pere Romeu took a gamble, the restaurant was his desire to bring the most Bohemian traces of Paris to Barcelona. It was to be a place for the cultured, for intellectuals and artists of the period and sure enough it became the place of inspiration for many artists not least Pablo Picasso. More recently, it was chosen by North American film Director, Woody Allen as the stage of one of the main scenes in his cinematic tribute to Barcelona “Vicky, Cristina, Barcelona” and is a must on the culinary agenda of any Barcelona first-timer.
Dining
The restaurant consists of two dining areas. The first, the Cafeteria, seats up to 40 people and is decorated with samples of art from its founding period. The cafeteria was used in the reproduction of the famous picture “The Tandem”, by Ramón Casas. The second, “the Dining Room”, has been inspired by the theaters of the golden age of Spanish writers. It boasts a viewing gallery which overlooks the ground floor café and plethora of art on its walls. Among them the famous piece painted by Picasso which adorns the front cover of the menu.
